As we all continue to navigate this "new state of normal" together, retail sign shops are facing many issues. Those include issues related to the supply chain, staffing challenges and the need to implement varied sales techniques that are both safe and "contact-free", when necessary. This brings us to the question, how can retail sign shop increase their profits in a pandemic? In short, sign shops can increase their bottom line by streamlining their product offerings, putting customer service and product quality first, and partnering with vendors who can help them do both.

COHO Apartment Homes Monument Sign

Streamline Product Line

The idiom 'jack of all trades, master of none' describes a person who can do many things, but isn't particularly good at any of them. Streamlining your sign shop's product line to meet the needs of your target market, while highlighting your individual strengths, will generate more profit long term.

In example, at Peachtree City Foamcraft we are a manufacturer of monument signage, we also offer carved HDU Signs, Foamcore Signage and PVC Sign panels. Additionally, we offer faux brick and stone accents and in-sign graphics to compliment our primary product offering. We do not, however, manufacture electrical components such as LED Message Centers or Channel Letters. Manufacturing electronic signage is not something we are equipped to do and as such, we remain dedicated to focusing on architectural signage. It's OK to say to no, to streamline your product offerings and focus on doing a smaller number of things really well.

Prioritize Product & Service over Pricing

When times get tough, some inexperienced businesses may choose to compete with price. This is dangerous territory. When you reduce your prices, during tough times, you are reducing the value of your product. A recent sign industry report released by the International Signage Association reported that the signage industry has experienced inflation of approximately 4.4% in 2021. Prices are going up.

Focus your efforts on needs-based selling. If you can offer your clients quality solutions to meet their needs and exceptional service, your business will continue to flourish despite challenges related to increased costs. Prioritize product and service over pricing.

Partner with Quality Wholesale Manufacturers

Our business is built on developing mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers, customers, franchises and our employees. In fact, most of these relationships have been flourishing for over a decade. As a retail sign shop, it is imperative to recognize that relationships with your suppliers, clients and quality manufacturing partners is the secret ingredient to long term success.

If you are interested in learning more about the products offered by Peachtree City Foamcraft - visit us online or request a new literature packet and design thumb drive to be mailed to you. Schnecksville, PA – Peachtree City Foamcraft has released the names of the winning entries in their annual Monument Sign Design Contest. The design contest made its debut in 2016 and continues to grow. Michael Fetter, Sales Manager for Peachtree City Foamcraft couldn’t be happier. "There were nearly 4 dozen entries this year. Several beautiful monument sign designs to choose from, the competition was tough, but at the end the decision was unanimous and three designs rose to the top to take home a prize".

The second place cash prize of $500.00 was awarded to Southern Sign Systems. If you search for the term "sign shops" on
Google, your search will yield approximately 202 million results. The
number one ranked website isn't even a sign shop; rather, it is a
plug-in with a forum. So how did they get to the top? A good design,
lots of links, tons of text, cool pictures... try again - they got to the top because of three magic letters, S-E-O.
SEO
is also known as search engine optimization, the methods necessary to
take your website from page 173,000 to page 1 on Google.
If you
are new to the world-wide-web and looking to promote your shop to the
masses, or just wondering what the first step is in taking over the web
like the plug-in site, which tops Google's organic search, ranking above
more than 202 million websites. This post is for you.
Let's take it from the top, this is SEO 101 for Sign Shops - Part 1.

Create a Website

You
can't compete, if you aren't in the game. Surprisingly, as the
marketing coordinator for wholesale monument sign manufacturer, Peachtree City Foamcraft,
I continue to speak to sign shop owners daily who do not have a website
-- and are desperate to improve their monument sign sales. A web
presence is just as important as having a business card, if not more
important. It establishes validity, builds brand awareness and allows
clients to see your work. You can sell yourself 24 hours a day/7 days a
week on your website.

Quality Content - Tell Us About Your Sign Shop

Imagine
you have just hired a team of sales people to go out and sell your
product. How should they sell your sign company to businesses? What
products do you offer? What is the process? What are the benefits? What
kind of payments do you accept? Your website should answer all of these
questions in order to effectively meet the quality content requirement.
How to organize the content is a topic for another day - the first step
is creating content that is quality, that explains who you are, what you
do, the benefits, the process and how to get a hold of you. Focus on
educating clients and giving them valuable information.

Call to Action

Tell
me what you want me to do. In order to rank, you need to have visitors.
New visitors, return visitors, links to your website -- they all count.
BUT, you won't have any visitors if your site fails to have a purpose.
Tell the visitors what they need to do. In example, "fill out this form
to schedule a free consultation", "complete this questionnaire for an
estimate", or call 555-SIGN for a free estimate. Make sure the method is
consistent through out your website.

Upload a Photo Gallery

Text
#1. Photos #2. Text is more important than photos as far as SEO is
concerned initially, however, in order to reduce your bounce rate
(customers leaving your site quickly) - you will need to keep their
attention, encourage them to visit you again, to recommend you to a
friend. Photo Galleries are a great way to show off your skills and establish a connection with visitors. In example, check out Peachtree's website gallery,
through the gallery images you can immediately get a feel for the
quality of their products and inspiration for designing these types of
signs.
Now that you have a basic website, which explains who you
are, what you do and points your potential client in the right
direction... it is time to talk about how to optimize your site and
improve your rankings.

Links, Please....

All of
the major search engines utilize a unique algorithm to calculate which
sites should rank above others. With that being said, links are like
votes. My job is to make sure Peachtree City Foamcraft is prom king.
Do your part to establish quality relationships with individuals within
your field and provide links to their website, ask them to link to
yours. Remember, the emphasis is quality links. This takes time and a
commitment to fostering relationships with your website visitors and
social media contacts.

Get Social

I have over hundreds of
contacts on LinkedIn, plenty of Friends on Facebook and my followers on
Twitter are the best. Many established organizations neglected the
power of social media, and as a result, are struggling to play catch up.
Think about the #ALSIceChallenge, the ALS Association redefined the
concept of leveraging social media to build brand awareness and augment
fundraising for a nonprofit organization. If you have no idea what I am
talking about, it is time to create a Facebook page and "get in the
know" - this will also allow you to share your website with contacts and
improve those inbound links.

In Part 2, we will focus on the five components of an SEO plan....

Surprisingly, while the knowledge-base and need varies -- the questions are always the same. Recently, one retail sign shop owner asked me break down "the meat and potatoes" of the product, to name the top 10 benefits of Peachtree's foamcore monument sign. I took a second and jotted down those top 10 features and here they are:

10. PROFITABLE
Foamcore monument signs have an excellent mark-up, they are extremely profitable for the sign-shop to sell and cost-effective for the end-user to purchase relative to real brick/stone and concrete.
Foamcore monument signs provide two unique benefits, that may seem like an oxymoron. They are lightweight AND durable. How can this be true? Peachtree monument signs are manufactured with a lightweight foam core which is then encapsulated in our exclusive plastic poly-armor(TM) hard coat and sprayed with a stucco finish to simulate the look of concrete.

The Foamcore Hammer Sample is key element in your sales presentation of Peachtree products to your client.
Designed by Peachtree City Foamcraft, the Hammer Sample was developed to showcase the unmatched impact resistance and durability, unique to Peachtree City Foamcraft Foamcore Monuments.

SEGD (Society for Environmental Graphic Design) has changed its name but not its shortened moniker. Still known as SEGD, the longhand title is now the Society for Experimental Graphic Design. The move from environmental to experimental recognizes "the transformation our design discipline has been undergoing for years" according to SEGD Preisdent, Amy Lukas.

The term "environmental" has taken on a new meaning for the building industry and the signage industry alike in recent years. The new meaning played a part in the organization's decision to change its name. In addition to the name change, leaders say they have a new mission and focus which is further defined by their new name. has named its Board of Directors for 2014, comprised of professionals
across the industry representing national and local sign companies,
suppliers and distributors.

“Our Board of Directors has vast experience in all facets of the sign
industry,” said Lori Anderson, ISA president and CEO. “These
individuals will help lead ISA in better serving our members and staying
abreast of issues that sign professionals face every day. They also
will help our industry grow stronger as we work on initiatives that
benefit us all.”

Chad Jones, president of Southwest Signs in San Antonio, Texas, will
serve as Chairman of the Board. Other executive committee members are
Vice Chairman Christopher Flejtuch, president of Quality Quick Signs in

As part of ISA’s reorganization, each of the three main
divisions—Suppliers/Distributors, Affiliated Associations and Direct
Members—will be represented on the Board of Directors. The
reorganization streamlined the relationship between ISA and its Affiliated Associations.
Local sign companies join at the Affiliated Association level and
receive automatic ISA membership. National sign companies join ISA
directly and are represented by the Direct Member Council.
Directors are: Joe Gibson, president of Ramsay Signs in Portland,
Oregon; Michael Hage, president/owner of All Signs, Inc. in Gulfport,
Miss.; Michael Quigley, vice president of Sign-Age of Tampa Bay, Inc. in
Clearwater, Fla.; and Ben Ziglin, president of Ziglin Signs in
Washington, Mo.

The Direct Member Council representatives on the Board are: John
Yarger, president and CEO of North American Signs, Inc. in South Bend,
Ind.; and Jeff Young, senior vice president of YESCO in Salt Lake City,
Utah.

Representing the Suppliers/Distributors Council on the Board are:

Dallas; Dave Miller, director of business development of Nova Polymers,
Inc. in West Caldwell, N.J.; and David Watson, national accounts manager
for WatchFire Signs by Time-O-Matic, Inc. in Danville, Ill.

The International Sign Association (ISA) is a 2,300-member trade
association. Its members are manufacturers, suppliers, and users of
on-premise signs and sign products from the 50 United States and 60
countries around the world. ISA supports, promotes, and improves the
worldwide sign industry, which employs or directly impacts over 250,000
American workers and more than $49 billion in annual shipments.
